Gullfoss Waterfall, located on the edge of the Southwest Highlands, south of Langjökull Glacier is in Southwest Iceland.

Gullfoss Waterfall, one of the top tourist attractions in Iceland, lies in the deep Hvítá River Canyon. When you approach the waterfall, you can see where the river rushes southward, but about a kilometer above the waterfall, it turns sharply to the right and flows down into a wide curved three-step “staircase” and then abruptly plunges in two steps into a deep canyon, some 32 meters deep.

Gullfoss Waterfall is easily accessible and easy to see from both the main parking area, opposite the waterfall, but also close up, following a narrow path down toward the waterfall. Those who want to see the waterfall up close must be careful, especially during the winter when the paths can be slippery.

Gullfoss Waterfall is one of the main attractions on the Golden Circle Route, Iceland’s favorite day tour, including also Geysir Hot Spring and Þingvellir National Park.

Geysir Hot Spring and the geothermal area, located on the edge of the Southwest Highlands in Haukadalur Valley, are south of Gullfoss Waterfall and Langjökull Glacier in Southwest Iceland.

Geysir Hot Spring sometimes referred to as ‘The Great Geysir” (Spouting Hot Spring) is the namesake of all of the world’s geysers. The Great Geysir was the first geyser described in a printed source and the first known to modern Europeans. Eruptions at Geysir can hurl boiling water up to 70 meters in the air. However, eruptions been infrequent have in recent years and, in fact, stopped altogether for years at a time.

Geysir Hot Spring is located in a highly geothermal active area, and while the mighty Geysir has stopped spouting, another magnificent geyser named Strokkur, only 50 meters away, erupts every few minutes, hurling boiling water up to as high as 50 meters, a truly unforgettable sight.

Geysir Hot Spring is one of the main attractions on the Golden Circle Route, Iceland’s most popular day tour that includes Gullfoss Waterfall and Þingvellir National Park.

Þingvellir National Park, located east of Reykjavík is in Southwest Iceland. It is where the Mid-Atlantic Ridge is the most visible, the place where the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates drift apart from each other at a distance of about 2.5 cm a year.

Þingvellir National Park is also where the Icelandic Parliament, Alþingi, was founded in the year 930, remaining until 1798. It is probably the country’s most sacred place and the single most popular tourist attraction in Iceland on the Golden Circle Route, Iceland’s most popular day tour, including also Geysir Hot Spring and Gullfoss Waterfall.

Þingvellir, where Icelanders meet on their most special occasions is a nature reserve and highly significant from a historical, geological and cultural viewpoint. Þingvellir was designated as a national park in 1928 using a special law to protect the remains of the parliament site. Later it was expanded to protect the spectacular nature in the surrounding area. Þingvellir National Park, the first national park in Iceland was decreed “a protected national shrine for all Icelanders, the perpetual property of the Icelandic nation under the preservation of parliament, never to be sold or mortgaged.”

Close by and to the northeast is the picturesque 1,060 meters high Mount Skjaldbreiður, (roughly translated to “Broad Shield Mountain”). The name seems to fit it perfectly since it looks like a huge broad shield lying on the ground. Believed to have been formed during an eruption about 9,000 years ago, the extensive lava fields from it flowed to the southwest, forming the Þingvallavatn Lake’s basin and Þingvellir National Park. Over the centuries, the lava field, crossing the North Atlantic Ridge, has been torn and twisted, forming huge rifts and ravines, the largest ones being Almannagjá (Common Man’s) Ravine, 7.7 kilometers long and up to 64 meters wide. Also, in the park are Hrafnagjá Gorge and Flosagjá Gorge both among the most sacred places in Þingvellir.

Öxarárfoss Waterfall that flows into the Almannagjá Ravine is another one of the gems in Þingvellir National Park. The waterfall and the deep water beneath it hold many sad stories since this is the place where women were drowned as punishment for what in the past were regarded as crimes.

The Almannagjá Ravine, a part of the Rift Valley, marks the crest of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge and the eastern boundary of the North American Plate. There is a walking path through the ravine, from the parking area. by the Service and Education Center, past Lögberg, the site where Alþingi was founded and finally past Öxarárfoss Waterfall over to the other end of the ravine, ending near the Þingvellir campsite.
